Equal Creatures is from Atlanta, GA and writes vulnerable, melodic indie-rock. Laurie Ray, founder of EC, & their songwriting has remained the one constant in the evolution of Equal Creatures. Ray’s raw & vulnerable lyrics are set to a backdrop of rich musical worlds. From the manic whirling parade of “Check Engine Light”, the painful but hopeful “Waylon”, the angry , neglected & desperate “Waiting in The Wings”— Ray becomes a lightning rod, an electrical conductor for a storm of emotions.
The band was birthed during the pandemic from a collection of songs lead singer and songwriter Laurie Ray had in draft form, songs inspired by Ray’s life experiences and a love of grunge, Americana, and indie-pop. From those demos, the band recorded and released their “Prey Animal” EP, a five-song release that explores queer identity, the isolation of love and loss, and living in the wake of traumatic experiences. Emotional and raw, these five songs were often dubbed sadcore or bubble grunge.
Equal Creatures has become a staple in the Atlanta indie-rock music scene. March of 2024 marked the release of their first full-length album, “Everything that Hurts,” a noticeable sonic maturation from their first release. “Everything that Hurts” is a colorful collection of ten songs that examine grief, love, lust, heartache and heartbreak, mania, and depression. The record was well received by the local Atlanta indie and alternative scene. As they continue to build their fanbase, they are consistently asked to open for established touring artists from various genres, including The Worriers, Thelma and the Sleaze, The Indigo Girls, and The Amy Ray Band.
